.Rar and Archive Tutorial |
|
|
This tutorial is for those who struggle to extract files from .rar and .zip and .7z etc. archives.
Step 1: Downloading the required programs
First up, to extract files from an archive, you're going to need to download an archiver.
If you are running Windows, download Winrar, the best archiver out there at the moment, supports .rar, .zip and .7z the three most popular archive types. Handles many other types as well. You only need the free evaluation version to do the job.
If you are running Mac, use Stuffit Expander or P7Zip Archiver.
So install the program you need.
Step 2: Extracting the file
Once it's been installed, you want to right click your file that either looks like a folder with a zip which means it's .zip extension or 3 books piled on top of each other on a page which means it's .rar extension and click "Extract Here". Any other weird extension files which has "Extract Here" in it's right click menu means it's an archive. I'm using the latest R4DS firmware file as an example.
Depending on the size of the files inside the archive, if it's about 500kb or larger, there may be a window that will pop up that will show how the extraction process and how long it will take etc. So once done, you should receive the file/s!
Success! It extracted properly! If it brings up another archive, just extract that. If 2 or more or a series of archives turn up, that means they split the original file into several archives then they compressed those archives. It's easy, just select the first part (labeled .001 etc.) then the rest should follow. If not, it should ask to browse for the second part. If that doesn't work, select them all, and click "Extract Here". If THAT doesn't work, you can try joining them all up by using a program such as HJSplit.
If you hit an error extracting, re-download the file as it may have not finished downloading or it got corrupt during download.
Happy extracting!
Here is a video I made showing me extracting this .rar file if you are still stuck.
